Panel Talk on Prisoners' Rights Sunday, October 15 after the play

Set in a penitentiary in Colombia—a country with notoriously overcrowded and violent prisons, based largely on the United States' model of mass incarceration—Maximum Security explores the lives of three cellmates and one guard, as they navigate a labyrinth of degradation and survival tactics behind bars. The Fall 2017 production at ID Studio Theater is presented in collaboration with BronxArtSpace's concurrent exhibition STATE PROPERTY, a multi-disciplinary examination of American consumerism of prison labor and our daily choices to purchase, condone or reject goods created in penitentiaries.

The play will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A: "Prison Politics: Conversations on the State of Prisoners Rights Today"  led by a panel of legal experts, human rights advocates, artists and journalists, moderated by Lucia della Paolera, the play's translator, that explores the complex question of prisoners’ rights and prison reform in Colombia, the US and worldwide. This discussion which follows two other panel discussions held on the topic in May and June 2015 seeking to contextualize and ground in current events the issues raised in the play, and to expand public awareness and engagement.

Maximum Security had it's English-language premiere at Theater for the New City in Spring, 2015, and later toured to DePaul University, IL during a conference on Prisoners' Rights, and throughout Colombia as part of the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Manizales, Colombia. This is the show's premiere in the Bronx.
